Electric cars are getting more and more popular with customers. Market studies predict rapidly increasing registration figures. Established electric cars like the Tesla models or new cars like the Mercedes EQC and the Jaguar I-Pace are competing with combustion cars as a full-fledged alternative. Those cars have a long range (longer than 400 km), very good mileage and flexible charging options. There is a need for new developments in infrastructure to be able to recharge a high amount of range in a low amount of time. An achievable goal is to recharge 500km of range in 14 minutes.

The Regensburg based companies AVL Software and Functions GmbH and Prettl Elektrik Automotive GmbH develop a modular charging system, that incorporates all existing standards and charging capacities and provides the opportunity to charge with higher voltage up to 963V and higher charging capacity up to 500kW. An additional bidirectional connection to the intelligent power grid of the future is intended. Thereby a versatile, comprehensive and therefore future-oriented charging concept gets implemented into practice.

The project was designed together with the E-Mobility Cluster Regensburg and will be completed at the end of 2020. It’s getting supported by the funding program “Elektromobilität und innovative Antriebstechnologien für mobile Anwendungen (BayEMA)” by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy.
